CHARLES MANN
At Nevada Reno, Charles was voted the most valuable defensive lineman in the Big Sky Conference in 1981 and 1982. As a senior, his 14 sacks led the conference. He finished third on his team with 76 tackles and was voted a Division l-AA All-American.
When Charles Mann came into the NFL in 1983, his number one goal was to earn respect from his peers. He earned it with four Pro Bowl appearances to his credit. One of the most physical pass-rushers to play the game, Charles used his 6'6", 270 lbs. size and strength to overpower opponents. The Redskins' Defensive End recorded 14 1/2 sacks in 1985; his highest output in one year. However, even when he was not sacking the quarterback, he was still a threat, as his 31 quarterback hurries will attest. The twelve-year veteran, who led the Superbowl XXII-Champion Redskins with 10 sacks, had compiled 83 sacks in his career.
Now, that Charles is off the field, he works as hard as he did when he was playing. Mann credits his faith for helping him keep a balance in life. He devotes a great deal of his time to the Good Samaritan Foundation, a organization that he and Art Monk, Tim Johnson, and Earnest Byner founded in 1993 to help restore hope in the inner city. He also finds time to make personal appearances, especially enjoying talking to the youth with a motivational message to reach for your own goals, and walk hand in hand with Christ.
His good looks, pleasing demeanor and sincere concern for other people are qualities that have given him the nickname, "The Marketable Mann". During the 1993 season, Charles could be heard weekly on Mix 107.3 giving his upclose and personal Redskin reports. His commercial endorsements have included McDonalds, Diet Coke, Swanson's Hungry Man Dinners, C & P Telephone, and Cowle's Nissan Chrysler Plymouth.
Charles has been seen in PSA spots for the National Kidney Foundation, the United Way, and the Ronald McDonald Children Charities. He has worked with the Read to Achieve program with the 7-11 stores. The Border Babies Foundation, Lever Brothers, Why School is Cool program, The Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Clubs, Children's Hospital, The Children's Cancer Foundation and numerous other Civic and Charitable organizations.
On the field, Charles Mann cast a menacing image, and so it was no surprise when he was cast on the television series, A Man Called Hawk, as Tank a tough guy. However, anyone who knows the real man will attest to his gentle nature. He was recently cast in the role of Coal Man, in a wonderful story titled Just In Time for the television series, Ghostwriter. Charles Mann is serving on President Clinton's National Service Initiative Committee. The program addresses the needs of children at risk in the areas of Education, Health, Public Safety and Environmental Protection.
He is the Co-Founder of the Good Samaritan Foundation. Charles is very proud to have been the recipient of a Washingtonian of the Year Award in 1994.
Charles played in four Superbowls: in 1984, 1988, 1992, and 1995. The last one was with the San Francisco 49ers verses the San Diego Chargers, in Miami, Florida. That was his third winning Superbowl.
Charles recently announced his retirement as a Professional Athlete and currently is tackling a microphone instead of a quarterback! He is hosting a Radio Show on WJFK and works full-time at WUSA-TV in Washington. His duties at Channel 9 include anchoring the sports on the weekend Morning Show, and a reporter during the weekdays.
Charles and his wife, Tyrena, are the proud parents of three children. Reading to his children, playing golf and an avid moviegoer are his favorite pastimes.
