A BROADCAST TO REMEMBER
Merle drew plenty of memorable assignments during his 45 years in sports broadcasting, but the one on the night of August 8, 1974 was unique. He went into the booth to call a World Football League game and became the only sports announcer in history to introduce the President of the United States for a speech on national television.
With the start of the game on hold, the camera moved to the White House Oval Office where a grim Richard Nixon informed the nation that he was resigning the next day. "After that, our game was pretty anti-climactic," Merle said.
